2015 GSE shokyu eigo course information

Aim: The purpose of this course is for students to improve their English skills while gaining insight into aspects of society around the globe. Students will read content materials on a variety of themes and then carry out exercises in all four skills. Emphasis will be placed on improving fluency, discussion and presentation skills, and vocabulary. Students will need to carry out research, think creatively, and work well with their peers.

Textbook:             Reading Keys 2.  Miles Craven    (Macmillan)

Grades: Participation 20%; Blog work 20%; Discussion & presentation performance 60%

What to bring: Textbook; USB memory stick; computer password/user ID; personal vocabulary book (or a method to keep a list of all new vocabulary); handouts; yourself on time

Attitude: Be prepared, positive, active, cooperative & helpful

Workload: There will be a significant amount of homework every week.

Types of homework:
1.    reading from textbook/completing textbook exercises
2.    preparing short presentations
3.    writing notes to help you take part in discussions
4.    writing a blog/commenting on other students’ blogs

Setting up your blog

To set up your blog, please do the following:

First get a gmail account
1.    go to http://www.gmail.com and click CREATE AN ACCOUNT
2.    fill in the information and get a gmail account
3.    DON’T FORGET YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD
  
Next get a blogger account
1.    go to http://www.blogger.com
2.    sign in with your gmail address and password
3.    create a new blog: choose a title and an address and a template for your blog. In settings, set the privacy to Not listed on Blogger. Not visible to search engines.”

Next tell John your information
1.    your blog title
2.    your blog address

How to manage your blog
When you sign in to blogger you will see your blog listed.
1.    click on the pencil icon to write a new post
2.    click on View Blog to view your blog
3.    click on the paper icon to view your post list, overview, template, settings etc
